Background & Rationale
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an emerging, standardized, and structured environmental assessment tool in heritage science. It supports the transformation of heritage science into an environmentally responsible endeavor by harmonizing efforts across sectors to inform eco-friendly choices. LCA serves as a vital evidence-based decision-support tool at both micro levels (evaluating specific conservation products, materials, and processes) and macro levels (formulating broader institutional strategies, scenarios, and policy options).
Objectives & Expected Learning Outcomes
This intensive 2-day course introduces key concepts of Life Cycle Thinking and provides expert-led, hands-on practical experience in applying LCA methodologies to real-world heritage conservation challenges.
Key Expected Outcomes
- Increased technical capacity to apply LCA methodologies directly within heritage science and conservation workflows.
- Comprehensive understanding of LCA principles, data requirements, boundary definitions, and methodological complexities.
- Enhanced skills to analyze, interpret, and critically evaluate Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) outputs.
- Strengthened awareness of environmental footprints linked to material selections, energy uses, and conservation interventions.
- Greater confidence in integrating sustainability considerations into heritage research proposals and institutional practices.
