The project MitiClim – ‘Climate Change Mitigation Strategies for the Preservation of Slovenian Written Cultural Heritage’ kicked-off on 21 Apr 2026 at a meeting at the National and University Library (NUK). MitiClim addresses the growing challenges posed by climate change in the preservation of written cultural heritage. The research focuses on developing innovative and sustainable models for library and archival storage, aiming to improve storage conditions while reducing environmental impact.
The MitiClim project is integrated within Pilot Project 2 of GreenHer CoE and will develop significant skills and capacity as part of Research Core 1.
The primary goal of the project is to develop effective storage solutions for varying temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) conditions utilizing passive strategies for both the planned construction of a facility and refurbishment of existing repositories. Experts will also provide impact assessments of these strategies on the long-term preservation of Slovenia’s written heritage.
The project brings together researchers from the fields of conservation, heritage science, building and civil engineering, physics, chemistry and facilities management. The project, ARIS J7-70270, involves NUK, the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG), the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the University of Ljubljana (UL FKKT), and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia (ZVKDS), and is coordinated by Dr Jasna Malešič.
