Sustainability has become central to heritage science due to increasing pressures from climate change, resource depletion, and socio-economic inequalities. Recent research on green transformation in heritage science highlights the importance of embedding environmental, social, and economic sustainability into heritage conservation and management. This provides a framework to reduce environmental impact, encourage minimal intervention, promote renewable or recycled materials, and support community-driven decision-making. Despite progress, heritage professionals still lack dedicated sustainability analysis tools with quantifiable indicators to guide decision-making.
This international workshop focuses on developing practical sustainability analysis tools tailored to cultural heritage workflows. The event explores integrated methodological frameworks, including Life Cycle Thinking methods (LCA, LCC, S-LCA) as standardized, internationally comparable approaches, alongside Circular Economy principles and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Furthermore, the workshop addresses how these tools can be effectively integrated into EU project tenders and research proposals. This event serves as the foundational opening to the GreenHer College specialized training series.
The Workshop Objectives are to i) Initiate the development of practical and holistic sustainability analysis tools tailored to heritage science workflow; ii) Introduce key concepts such as Life Cycle Thinking (LCA, LCC, S-LCA), Circular Economy, and BIM in the context of cultural heritage; iii) Explore practical integration of sustainability indicators into EU research tenders, project proposals, and conservation practice.
The workshop experts include Dr. Antonia Gravagnuolo (CNR ISPC, Italy), Prof. Dr. Aiduan Borrion (UCL, UK), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Katja Malovrh Rebec (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia), Dr. Dieuwertje Schrijvers (WeLOOP, France), and Prof. Dr. Nasser Ayoub (Ecologic, Egypt).
