GreenHer CoE is excited to announce five long-term post/doc posts ending 31 Jan 2032. The posts are open for international applicants, and we welcome anyone to apply. Note the specific entry requirements, particularly regarding skills and previous experience and education.

The starting salary for a post-doctoral researcher is €3071 (pre-tax). As a public employee you will be entitled to a summer and a Christmas bonus.

Please note that as a GreenHer post/doc researcher you are expected to develop a portfolio of your own research in due time, as well as an intensive stakeholder engagement and institutional citizenship programme of activities. We are thus looking for applicants with a proven experience of teamworking, lateral thinking, problem solving and a deep sense of the value that science brings to the society.

1. Post/doc Position: Digital Technologies for Heritage Research, Documentation, Reconstruction and Engagement 

Location of work: GreenHer Unit ZVKDS, Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, Ljubljana

Type of position: This is a shared appointment, 50% at University of Ljubljana and 50% at the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia (job advert here, applicants should apply to both). 

Research Domain: The researcher will focus on the development of digital technologies for cultural heritage research and dissemination, including:

  • 3D modelling and digital reconstruction of historical objects, buildings, and sites;
  • Virtual, augmented, and extended reality (VR/XR) applications;
  • Interactive visualizations and immersive digital environments;
  • Advanced digital workflows for documentation, interpretation, and presentation of cultural heritage.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:

  • Develop digital solutions for the documentation, reconstruction, and presentation of cultural heritage using advanced 3D technologies.
  • Produce high-quality 3D models and digital reconstructions of historical buildings, sites, artefacts, and historical processes.
  • Design and implement VR/XR applications, interactive visualizations, and immersive projection environments for research, education, and public engagement.
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research activities, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Prepare scientific publications and contribute to conference presentations.
  • Participate in the preparation and implementation of national and international research projects.
  • Work within interdisciplinary teams combining expertise from computer science, digital technologies, architecture, heritage studies, and the humanities.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research results through exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, and other knowledge-transfer activities.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Informatics, Multimedia, Digital Media, Architecture, Urban Planning, Design, or another relevant interdisciplinary field.
  • At least one year of relevant research or professional experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in:
    • Advanced 3D modelling and visualization;
    • VR/XR content development;
    • Digital reconstruction methodologies;
    • Interactive and immersive digital environments;
    • Independent research and critical analysis.
  • Excellent command of English (spoken and written).
  • Strong communication, organisational, and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with some of the following software and technologies is considered an advantage:

  • 3D modelling and animation: Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya;
  • Visualization and rendering: Unreal Engine, Unity, V-Ray;
  • Immersive projection systems: MadMapper or similar software;
  • Digital content production: Adobe Creative Cloud or equivalent.

Desirable Experience: 

  • Participation in cultural heritage research projects;
  • Development of interactive exhibitions or digital heritage applications;
  • Knowledge of immersive visualization and projection technologies;
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary research teams;
  • Participation in the preparation or implementation of European (e.g., Horizon Europe) or national research projects.

2. Post/doc Position in Participatory Research, Heritage Values and Heritage Policy (Research Core III) 

Location of work: GreenHer Unit UP, Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska, Koper

Type of position: This is a shared appointment, 50% at University of Ljubljana and 50% at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska (job advert to follow). 

Research Domain: The researcher will focus on Pilot Project 6 (Research Core III) focussing on heritage values, particiatory research and policies, and will involve:

  • Development of an understanding of different heritage values attributed to cultural heritage by local communities, public institutions, experts, economic operators, visitors and other stakeholders, and integrating them into sustainable management models.
  • Development of the content, concepts and methodologies relevant to the pilot project and the establishment and operation of the Laboratory for Knowledge Co-Creation, which will represent the central platform for the cooperation of researchers, decision-makers and other stakeholders.
  • Planning and implementation of interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and participatory research. This includes the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods, such as interviews, focus groups, surveys, participatory workshops, co-creation processes and other forms of field research.
  • Analysis of national, local and European strategic documents, legislation, policies and management models in the fields of cultural heritage, spatial development, tourism, environment and climate change.
  • Development of operational tools, methodological guidelines and recommendations for sustainable heritage management and in verifying their applicability in pilot cases. 
  • Presentation of the research results in the form of scientific articles, expert papers, project reports, methodological manuals and recommendations for decision-makers, and present them at national and international scientific conferences, expert meetings, workshops and round tables.
  • Development of project proposals and perform organizational, coordination and professional work necessary for the work within the GreenHer CoE, and will take care of the integration between the CoE Units and the Central Office, and contribute to work reports.
  • Other work and tasks in the wider area of the Center’s activities, under the instructions of the GreenHer CoE Director.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must have:

  • PhD in archaeology, heritage studies, art history or another related humanities or social science discipline
  • At least one year of relevant research or professional experience or demonstrated research interest in one or more fields related to cultural heritage, governance, public policies, participation, sustainable development or climate change.
  • Active knowledge of the Slovenian language
  • Excellent command of English (spoken and written).
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment
  • Strong communication, organisational, and teamwork skills.

Desirable Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrable experience of one or more of the following fields of activity: 

  • Participatory, action, or community research,
  • Research into cultural heritage and heritage values,
  • Experience of working in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary groups,
  • Working in national or international research projects,
  • Preparation of scientific publications in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Participation in cultural heritage research projects.

3. Post/doc Position in Building Science, Construction Product Research and Built Environment (Research Core I) 

Location of work: GreenHer Unit ZAG, Slovenian National Building And Civil Engineering Institute, Ljubljana

Type of position: This is a shared appointment, 50% at University of Ljubljana and 50% at the Slovenian National Building And Civil Engineering Institute (job advert to follow). 

Research Domain: The researcher will develop and use advanced methods for microclimate modeling, hygrothermal analysis and building envelope analysis in order to evaluate the impacts of environmental factors on the built environment and cultural heritage, including:

  • Implementation of computer-aided simulations,
  • Development of software tools, programming, and the management and analysis of data using databases,
  • Participation in the research and optimization of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems,
  • Development of methods to improve the energy, environmental and operational efficiency of buildings.

Special emphasis will be placed on sustainable approaches, evaluation of impacts on the internal environment, compliance with applicable standards and understanding of the links between the microclimate, building materials, users and the environment.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will conduct research in the field of environmental performance, sustainable management of the built environment and heritage science, combining experimental measurements, simulation approaches and data analysis. They will participate in the development of new methodologies for assessing the condition, operation and long-term preservation of buildings and cultural heritage in changing environmental conditions. In addition to scientific and innovation work, the responsibilities will include the following:

  • Active participation in the development of operational tools, methodological guidelines and recommendations for sustainable heritage management and in verifying their applicability in pilot cases.
  • Presentation of research results in the form of scientific articles, expert papers, project reports, methodological manuals and recommendations for decision-makers.
  • Presentations to the public and the media.
  • Presentations at domestic and international scientific conferences, professional meetings, workshops and round tables.
  • Organisation, coordination and other professional work necessary for the work within the GreenHer CoE, as well as liaison between the CoE units and the Central Office.
  • Other tasks in the wider area of the Center’s activities, under the direction of the GreenHer CoE Director.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in a suitable field of research.
  • At least one year of relevant research or professional experience.
  • Excellent command of English (spoken and written).

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with some of the following software and technologies is considered an advantage:

  • Published research in relevant fields of activity (documented scientific research and/or research and development outputs),
  • Presentations at international professional meetings.
  • Evidence of successful research demonstrating the ability to independently manage small projects.
  • Knowledge of microclimate modelling, hygrothermal analysis and building envelope analysis.

4. Post/doc Position in Sustainable Buildings, Energy Efficiency and Environmental Assessment of the Built Environment (Research Core I) 

Location of work: GreenHer Unit NUK, National and University Library, Ljubljana

Type of position: This is a shared appointment, 50% at University of Ljubljana and 50% at the National and University Library (job advert to follow). 

Research Domain: The researcher will focus on the development and application of advanced methods for sustainable building design, environmental assessment and building performance, including: 

  • Energy-efficient buildings and building performance assessment. 
  • Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.
  • Sustainable construction and life cycle assessment (LCA).
  • Building microclimate and hygrothermal modelling.
  • Indoor environmental quality and interactions between building envelopes and technical building systems.
  • Environmental performance of construction products and sustainable heritage management.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct independent research and development in the fields of building energy performance, HVAC systems, sustainable construction and life cycle assessment (LCA).
  • Develop, apply and validate numerical models, computational simulations and methodologies for assessing the energy, environmental and functional performance of buildings and technical building systems.
  • Perform life cycle assessment (LCA), carbon footprint and environmental impact analyses of products and processes, and prepare technical documentation supporting sustainable design.
  • Conduct research on building microclimate, hygrothermal behaviour of building envelopes, indoor environmental quality and interactions between building envelopes and HVAC systems.
  • Prepare technical reports, expert opinions and scientific documentation related to the research area.
  • Contribute to the assessment and verification of construction products and their environmental performance.
  • Participate in the preparation, acquisition and implementation of national and international research and innovation projects.
  • Contribute to the development of operational tools, methodological guidelines and recommendations for the sustainable management of cultural heritage and validate them through pilot case studies.
  • Publish research findings in scientific journals and present results through scientific papers, project reports, methodological guidelines and policy recommendations.
  • Present research outcomes at national and international conferences, professional meetings, workshops and public engagement events.
  • Perform organisational, coordination and professional tasks within the GreenHer Centre of Excellence, including collaboration between GreenHer units and the Central Office.
  • Perform other research and professional duties related to the activities of the GreenHer Centre of Excellence as assigned by the Centre Director.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must have:

  • PhD in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Physics, Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering or another closely related technical discipline.
  • At least one year of relevant research or professional experience.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with some of the following software and technologies is considered an advantage:

  • Participation in research and innovation projects.
  • Research leadership or coordination experience.

5. Post/doc Position in Computer Science, Information Science and Digital Heritage (Research Core IV)

Location of work: GreenHer Unit UM, University of Maribor, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Maribor

Type of position: This is a shared appointment, 50% at University of Ljubljana and 50% at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (job advert to follow). 

Research Domain: The successful candidate will contribute to interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence for digital cultural heritage, focusing on the development of advanced geospatial AI methods for the analysis, interpretation and management of cultural heritage data, including:

  • Development of novel geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) models for cultural heritage,
  • Research on spatio-temporal graph neural networks supported by physics-informed learning and other state-of-the-art AI approaches.
  • Development of tools for the acquisition, processing and analysis of cultural heritage data.
  • Demonstration of AI models in cultural heritage-related applications, including socio-economic analyses and decision support.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:

  • Develop novel geospatial AI models for cultural heritage applications.
  • Conduct research on spatio-temporal graph neural networks, physics-informed machine learning and related AI methodologies.
  • Develop software tools for the acquisition, processing and analysis of cultural heritage data.
  • Demonstrate and validate developed AI models using real-world cultural heritage datasets.
  • Publish research results in high-impact scientific journals and present them at national and international conferences.
  • Prepare project reports, methodological guidelines and recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Participate in the preparation of national and international research proposals.
  • Perform organisational, coordination and professional tasks required for the operation of the GreenHer Centre of Excellence.
  • Facilitate collaboration between GreenHer CoE units and the Central Office and contribute to project reporting.
  • Perform other research and professional duties related to the activities of the GreenHer Centre of Excellence as assigned by the Centre Director.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Informatics, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science or a closely related discipline.
  • At least one year of relevant research or professional experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in:
  • Advanced processing of geospatial data (LiDAR, GeoTIFF, etc.);
  • Machine learning and deep learning algorithms;
  • Programming in C++ and Python;
  • Independent scientific research and critical analysis.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and international research environment.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Research in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary teams;
  • Participation in national or international research projects;
  • Preparation of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals;
